Sustainable Waste Management

Our planet has provided us with an abundance of natural resources.  But we have not utilized them responsibly and currently consume far beyond what our planet can provide. We must learn how to use and produce in sustainable ways that will reverse the harm that we have inflicted on the planet.

This upcyclelab space involves the process of transforming waste materials such as woods, steels, plastics etc. into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality such as used plastics being transformed into new products such as chairs or keychains.

UpcycleLab Space to Rebuild Non-Organic Waste Materials Into New Innovations

This upcyclelab space involves the process of transforming waste materials such as woods, steels, plastics etc. into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality such as used plastics being transformed into new products such as chairs or keychains. As waste issues are becoming more extreme, our objective is to reduce these waste issues by upcycling these waste products and make use of them by modifying or turning them into a new product. We received contributions from donors who intend to get rid of their old equipment or house appliances during a campaign such as festival house cleaning. Every donation will be rebuilt either for the development of our store or upcoming innovations. The donors are of course rewarded for the contributions with any of our homemade products.

Beneficiaries : Local communities communities

Impacts :
Amount of plastic waste upcycled: Approx 200-500kg
Unit of recycled house appliance: More than 100 units

Responsible Tourism

R1 : Responsible tourism with hotels and restaurants (before MCO)

A project collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB). Responsible Tourism Initiatives is launched to advocate for proper food waste management in the state’s tourism industry. The initiative aims to drive positive changes among stakeholders and partners (hotels and restaurants) to reduce and recycle food waste. The execution involves segregation of organic waste at source, implementation of sustainable waste management which includes composting, education and empowering the staff on proper waste segregation.

R2 : Responsible tourism with homestays (during MCO)

Educational training was included in the execution to transfer Sustainable Waste Management and Soap Making Skills to the community. This can help to provide skill sets for the community, especially women at home who can handmade the soap and then sell it as a living. The training will include hands-on practicing to make sure the community understands and masters the skills.

Beneficiaries :
R1 : 37 stakeholders and partners up-to-date (hotels and restaurants) *As included in No.1 WormingUp Facility*
R2 : 23 homestays throughout Sarawak have been executed, on-going 23 more homestays

Impacts :
R1 : To date, 82,268.8 tons of food waste has been collected and upcycled instead of trucks off to the landfill.  *Impact is included in No.1 WormingUp Facility*
R2 : Hygiene essential package benefit to approximately 37,221 rural villagers

Educational Children Book Series

The start of our book project came from the idea of creating awareness and cultivating interest towards environmental conservation and sustainability from young age, especially when workshop cannot be organized during this pandemic time. We wish to cultivate this idea starting with our younger generations; the children focusing on the age of 7 – 12 years old through reading. Our book project consists of 7 series, on a story of an Axolotl, a type of an amphibian “walking fish”, named Mr. Axolotl Smith the 3rd (nicknamed Alex) on his journey to tackle the issue of waste management that has been going around our life. This book project is accompanied with a fun and adventurous Do-It-Yourself mini waste project that children can do at home. The 7 series books are on the topics as such; Plastic Waste, Food Waste, Paper Waste, E-Waste, Textile Waste, Metal Waste and Glass Waste. To date, the full draft of Book Series 1 and 2 are almost completed.

Targeted beneficiaries : Children age 7 – 12 years old

Sustainable Farming Workshop

Farmily – Sustainable Farming and Fresh Produce Channeling System

Farmily is a term that combines the word farm and family. This platform is designed to help small landowners raise their families. Farmily focuses on helping local smallholder farmers grow high-quality, nutritious, and consistent fresh produce in a sustainable manner. Farmily is a platform dedicated to assisting rural producers in growing crop yield and supplying fresh produce to customers to achieve sustainable food supply chain. Farmily will also be able to assist farmers in connecting with one another and exchanging ideas and tips within the group. Sustainable farming practices include composting, post-harvesting method, sustainable farming consumables, utilization of biological control agents and sustainable farming management.

Old Clothes Donation Campaign for Farmers

Clothes donation campaign to help our farmers (particularly in Bengoh Dam) to support their sustainable alternative to protect their crops from wild animals attack. These farmers have been using old clothes to cover their crops instead of using chemicals to prevent the wild animals from eating their crops. With this sustainable alternative, our farmers have been able to produce better and organic crops without using chemicals.

Surplus Processing for Food Wastage Mitigation And Sustainable Livelihood

One of the major problems faced by the villages and our operation team on the fresh produce is that some of their crops are not marketable due to their appearance. Most markets or buyers refuse to buy deformed/crooked/misshapen fresh produce which results in these fresh produce remaining unsold and left rotten or thrown away. The unmarketable produces are no different from the marketable ones in terms of quality. Hence, the unmarketable can still be sold by making it into long shelf life foods. Which can contribute more in terms of profits to the villages, capacity building as well as reduce food wastage issues.

Targeted beneficiaries : Rural women communities

Impacts : Amount of surplus saved: Approx 11 tons

List of products : Banana/tapioca chips/powder, fruit jam/paste, Tuak, Acar, frozen fruits etc
